The Goddess Test - Aimee Carter The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter was a surprise to me...a very pleasant surprise. There are several Greek Myth retellings coming out in the wake of the success of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series. I'm expecting that I will want to read all of them, but will end up loathing most of them (insert my review for Starcrossed here). I did not loathe The Goddess Test. I loved it! It was fresh and new and made me happy she's coming to the store I work at. Squee! The premise is this: Kate has lived with her Mother's impending death for four years. Acting as a nursemaid since her Mother contracting cancer Kate has put her life on hold. Now her Mother wants to head home to die, in Northern Michigan. In Eden Kate makes a few acquaintances but doesn't let herself go. And the sudden appearances of a dark haired man only complicates things. When her Mother encourages her to go to a party everything goes wrong... Before she knows it Kate's future is tied to Henry. Henry is Hades, the lord of the Underworld. His future rests on Kate's ability to pass a series of trials If she doesn't he will fade into oblivion... but if she does she's his forever. There, I think that's enough non-spoilers for the moment. This take on Greek Mythology is very unique. I loved the idea of earning the right to immortality, not just getting it like most YA books on the theme... Very Herculean labours. The book is an easy read. I read it in two sittings, and the characters are strong, particularly Kate and Henry. I am very ready to go on another journey with them next year (groan, another series, dammit!). I think this is one I will be thinking about for a while.5 out of 5 stars. Carter does Michigan proud in this one. :)- review courtesy of www.bibliopunkk.net
