Jekel Loves Hyde

Jekel Loves Hyde - Beth Fantaskey So, coming off of the uber fluffy (yet really fun) Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, I decided to to read Beth Fantaskey's other novel currently in print - Jekel Loves Hyde. I couldn't resist more of Fantaskey's cheek, the delightful way in which she weaves together old world legends and new trends in YA literature... boy, was I in for a surprise. Not only did Fantaskey's Jekel Loves Hyde meet the need for something old world and delightful...it exceeded it in spades. I opened up JLH expecting another mildly quirky, melodic romp... what I got was the full blown symphonic gala.We instantly meet quiet, mild mannered Jill Jekel... artistically inclined, even tempered, and fighting for Valedictorian. She's interested in Chemistry and controlling Chaos - enter Chaos in the form of one Tristen Hyde, quick witted bad boy pianist from across the pond.In fact enter him at Jill's father's funeral...whose been unexpectedly stabbed and murdered, causing the Jekels to fall apart. Jill is so upset that when Tristen takes her in his arms and kisses her at the funeral she doesn't know what to do... but the enigmatic British boy at the funeral will always strike a chord with her.Fast forward to the first day of school's Chemistry class. Jill and Tristen share the class with her best friend, Becca, the jock savant of the school and the academic darling Darcy Gray...who is competing with Jill for Valedictorian. Enter also one Chemistry contest, one amazing scholarship, one forbidden partnership, and one crazy idea and suddenly the book gets that much more interesting.Intrigued? You should be, this all happens in, quite literally, the first pages of the book.I was blown away by Fantaskey's clever retelling of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. She nailed it, utterly. She blended the original gothic story and this new tale so cleverly it feels seamless. Bravo, Ms. Fantaskey... Bravo. I am very much amazed by the darkness of this book.5 out of 5 stars. Hands down. More of this, please Fantaskey. Much more of this.- review courtesy of www.bibliopunkk.net
