Firestorm (Weather Warden Series #5)

Firestorm - Rachel Caine I was all excited to pick up Firestorm by Rachel Caine. So very excited. My reading of it, though, is rather lacking in the experience I wanted. It was utterly a fine read... and that was the problem. The Weather Warden series has continued to wow and surprise me... even if upon initial reads my opinion is minor my esteem grows with examination. These books build, frankly. They grow in the reader's mind... they gain strength. This one, however, was the first book in the series I found myself skimming. Ouch. This is the book that illustrates the break between the Warden and Genie factions. War is at hand and Joanne must decide where her heart is... with her Warden/human side or with the Djinn... with David, her one true love. She more or less spends the entire book bouncing between one side of North America to the other and the feeling creates a sense of whiplash for the reader. Somewhere in the bit where she was Canada I grew bored. It began to drag, and my skimming glasses came on. It picks up at the end enough to pull the reader back in, but I felt a bit dismayed by that point. How can this happen? These series is phenomenal... but, then again, it is the fifth book and the first book that really breaks with the core formula. I hope it doesn't mean I am, overall, growing weary.I should give this a four, because much of it was interesting... but I can't. It's a very high 3 out of 5. I should also probably grab another book for a break. Maybe it's time to read my monthly Newbery title. Here's hoping that when I come back to this series (later this week) book 6 will be a good one.- review courtesy of bibliopunkk.net
