Through a Glass Darkly

Through a Glass Darkly - Karleen Koen This is going to be the briefest, most cursory of reviews. Through a Glass Darkly by Karleen Koen has sat on my bookshelf for at least ten years. I think I bought it (and its sequel) at a used book store for a buck each. It's long, it's historical romance... so I put it off. This year I deemed it one of my "Blue Books"... a pile of books that I have to read (or abandon) this year because I don't want to carry it around any longer if I don't have to.Through a Glass Darkly has, sadly, been abandoned. I'm not up for verging on 800 pages of (gestures in the book's general direction) this.We meet Barbara, spoiled and privileged but looked down upon her mother. We meet mom, whose opinion of society if only heightened by her persistent romantic scandals. We meet Grandmom, who is horrified by her daughter's behaviour and determined to make a good match for Barbara. I read all of 35 pages to know that the constant feminine power struggle dominance thing was going to do nothing for me. That, and Barbara is naive and blah... nobody I'd like to follow around for that long. And her name is Barbara, which is a name that has always grated on my back teeth (bad person association)...and now I'm going to have a host of Barbaras tell me I'm insensitive. Sorry... it's true. Not for me. Not the first book, or the second book, or the third book which I had waiting for me at work (if I turned out to like this series). Nope. Not wasting the time... and in one fell swoop I knocked 2000+ pages off of my reading goal for this year. 1 out of 5 stars. I don't expect I'll ever have the patience for this one... the cover is pretty though.- review courtesy of www.bibliopunkk.net
